about our program
Life on the farm, equine therapy, along with wilderness and outdoor activities, is what makes our program unique. Residents receive support and guidance by our clinical family with a focus on building their self-confidence, self-esteem, while strengthening their values and learning how to put them into practice. Our treatment program uses a mix of traditional aboriginal healing practices along with western treatment methods, that are evidence-based, with a trauma informed approach. Our goal is to help clients regain balance and build autonomy in their life.
Nestled in Opasatika, a quaint Northern Ontario community, La Maison Arc-en-Ciel (MAEC) offers 6 private beds for young males ages 12 to 24, who are struggling with addictive behaviours and often other mental health issues. With a harm reduction philosophy of care, our centre accommodates clients who are on Opiate Antagonist Treatment (OAT), to participate in our program and work on their recovery. MAEC uses a three-stage approach: early recovery, recovery and maintenance. Residents take part in both our therapy and academic programs to improve their life skills and live a healthy successful life. There is no set length of stay, and each clients’ needs are unique. Our program also involves working with the family to help strengthen connection and build a stronger relationship. We offer continuous intake and our program is free of charge to Ontarians.
As the name suggests, this form of treatment uses the horse as a mediator between the therapist and the client. The relationship with the horse helps to identify the inner suffering in the person.
The relationship with the horse can be greatly beneficial. This therapy will:
Increase learning ability & concentration;
Develop a sense of autonomy & accomplishment;
Increase self-esteem and motivation;
Improve the management of emotions;
Teaches respect for others;
Demonstrates acceptance of responsibility;
Encourages cooperation with others.
All those who encounter difficulties, whether it's psychological, existential, relational, behavioural and even physical, will benefit from this therapy. It has been proven in cases of depression, anxiety and substance abuses. For this reason, La Maison Arc-en-Ciel has integrated this service into its programming.
